Lunchtime take away snacks are available, too, with samosas being a firm favourite along with sandwiches and Tiptree Patisserie carrot cake a best seller. Alongside this a range of hot snacks are baked daily.
Guntons now offers a wide range of products under their own label, all specially sourced for quality and taste. This range includes chutneys, marmalades, biscuits, teabags, retro sweets and more. There is also a range of tea-towels, bags and other linenware all depicting various scenes around Colchester.
The cheese department houses well over a hundred cheeses including local, British and European varieties.
Customers will find H Gunton in Colchester’s Crouch St. This friendly, welcoming shop bears testament to the good old fashioned values which are often lost in many of today’s modern food stores. The shop, which is still on its original site, was started by the late Herbert Gunton in 1936 to stock quality foods which most shops didn’t and to roast coffee and blend tea. All of which are still part of the business today. Herbert’s son Geoffrey joined him later and was still working in the shop up to 2001. Today his grandson, Keith and great grandson Philip run the shop with the aid of Keith’s wife Valerie.
In the beginning the shop had one errand boy and only occupied 81 Crouch St. In 1960 the shop next door was purchased and Guntons expanded. The coffee rooms upstairs opened in 1961 and after further extensions the shop that you see today was created.
Today Guntons is a pleasure to visit, as it provides customers from Colchester and the surrounding area with an array of delicacies and a website now allows their offerings and hampers to be bought anywhere in the UK. To many Guntons is a special place to come for the wide variety of cheeses, coffees and teas which are on offer.
The cheese department houses well over a hundred cheeses including local, British and European varieties. There are more than twenty coffees available, most of which are roasted on the premises, but we do hold guest coffees and a specially imported Espresso blend from Italy.
We also stock a wide variety of local products including sausages and bacon, ice-cream, freshly baked bread from Stanway, Tiptree preserves, beers, wines, mead, liqueurs and much more.
Christmas hampers are a speciality with a huge range available off the shelf from October each year. This is further enhanced by a large range of baskets which customers can fill with goods and have packed as gifts in store.
They also offer a bespoke service if there is not time for the customer to choose goods themselves which is available all year around.
Now into their 82nd year trading in Colchester Guntons is still special and helps to make Crouch St a great shopping location.
